ARMA Bulletin Addressing Roof Stains

This document addresses roof stains, yet it is vague in value. Some notable points in the bulletin are the mention of bleach-to-water ratios. Household bleach is unlikely to work very well even straight, especially if it had severely degraded from sitting on the shelf too long. Standard household bleach is typically 4%-6% sodium hypochlrite. So cutting this type of bleach with water would suggest a mere 1%-2% sodium hypochlorite consistancy. For a more effective cleaning a 12.5% sodium hypochlorite strength would work when added to the ARMA ratio.

It also mentions algae resistant shingles. These are by far the most difficult shingles to clean. That is correct! These shingles are not immune to roofing stains. Copper shingles lose its effectiveness once the copper patinas. Why they are so much more difficult to clean, I do not know.

Most importantly it states clearly at the bottom to not use any high pressure. Even roofs with heavy moss and lichens will come completely clean after a treatment. It just takes a bit longer for the root system to die and dry out. The rain will take care of the rest.

ARMA Buletin Addressing Black Roof Stains

EPA Drops Requirement for Third Party Testing on Lead Paint Removal

EPA Drops Requirement for Third Party Testing on Lead Paint Removal
07/20/2011

After carefully weighing all available information and considering the public comments, EPA has concluded it is not necessary to impose new lead-dust sampling and laboratory analysis, known as the clearance requirements, as part of the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (LRRP) rule. The Agency believes that the existing lead-safe work practices and clean up requirements -- which went into place in 2010 -- will protect people from lead dust hazards created during renovations jobs without the need for additional clearance requirements. Nothing in today's action will hamper implementation of the tough protections already in place. EPA determined that the lead-safe work practices will protect human health without imposing additional regulatory burdens and costs associated with taking dust samples and obtaining laboratory analyses.

"We're pleased that the EPA listened to the concerns of remodelers about the extreme costs the proposed clearance testing would have imposed," said Bob Peterson, NAHB Remodelers chair and a remodeler from Fort Collins, Colo. "Home owners are saved from spending a great deal of money on lead testing. If remodeling is more affordable, home owners will be able to hire an EPA-certified renovator to keep them safe from lead dust hazards during renovation."

At NAHB's request this regulation was selected for review by the EPA under the Presidential Executive Order for Regulatory Review (Improving Regulation and Regulatory Review, 76 FR 3821 issued on Jan. 21) concerning the impact of federal rules on small businesses and job creation.

The lead rule applies to homes built before 1978 and requires renovator training and certification, following lead-safe work practices, containing and cleaning dust, and record keeping.

Although EPA is not imposing clearance requirements, the final rule clarifies and strengthens the current lead-safe work practices, including requiring that a vertical containment system or equivalent measures be used when outside renovations are performed within 10 feet of a property line, and that HEPA-vacuum filters be changed at regular intervals.

Please visit www.epa.gov/lead for a copy of this final rule or for additional information on the LRRP requirements.

Copper Industry Launches New DIY Architectural and Plumbing Videos

Copper Industry Launches New DIY Architectural and Plumbing Videos
05/31/2011

NEW YORK, NY -- The "Do It Proper with Copper" video series is back with its second installment of DIY architectural and plumbing how-to videos.

The short, instructional videos have been produced by the Copper Development Association (CDA) and are designed to illustrate exactly how one can use this versatile metal in plumbing, architecture and building and construction projects.

CDA project managers Larry Peters, who specializes in architectural applications, and Harold Moret, who specializes in plumbing applications, once again provide their expertise in proper copper application techniques.

The new series expands on the first how-to videos which launched in 2010 and cover building techniques such as: vertical lap seams, flat seams and standing seams for architectural copper systems and bending & flaring, structural adhesives and a continuation of brazing techniques used in plumbing applications.

Each video explains which tools are needed for the application, while giving a step-by-step tutorial that is easy to understand for anyone from the average do-it-yourselfer to the seasoned professional. The videos break down the different copper methods, and make sure no small details are overlooked. For example, the standing seam video not only discusses how the seam is constructed, but also how cleats should be used to attach the sheet copper to the substrate of the roof or wall.

The Do it Proper with Copper video series could be applied in the classroom and used as a learning tool by vocational schools, for training programs and apprenticeship workshops.

"We received good feedback from the first series, both from individuals using copper on their own projects and from instructors using the videos as a teaching tool. So we created this second series to expand to other joining systems and applications," said Andy Kireta Jr., vice president of building construction for CDA. "The videos are great for anybody looking for guidance on the right way to install copper systems, and they are packaged in a way that makes specific information easy to access and understand. In just a few short minutes you can gain confidence that your skills in installing the system will allow copper to provide the lifetime of service that you expect." The Do it Proper with Copper video series is available for free download at: www.copper.org/applications/doityourself/homepage.html or you can view on YouTube.

Beacon Roofing Supply Reports $6.2 Million Loss in Second Quarter

Beacon Roofing Supply Reports $6.2 Million Loss in Second Quarter
05/09/2011
PEABODY, MA -- Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. said it lost $6.2 million in the second quarter, on sales of $296.3 million. Sales increased 3.8% during the quarter

Paul Isabella, the Company's President & Chief Executive Officer, stated: "Despite an even harsher winter in most of the northern U.S., we managed to beat last year's results. Our second quarter 2011 results did fall short of our expectations, but our first half results tracked close to our fiscal year 2011 plan and also ahead of last year's first half. We are encouraged because our gross margin continues to improve from last year and we again increased our cash holdings. Our commercial and complementary businesses continued to perform well but most of our regions experienced declines in their residential re-roofing businesses, which included the negative impact of a drop in average shingle prices. In addition, our operating income was unfavorably affected by an increase in our bad debt provision and by higher operating losses in our acquired markets. We feel we are well-positioned to benefit from an expected pick-up in volume and price increases in the second half of our fiscal year, and we remain comfortable with our full year expectations."

Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. is a leading distributor of roofing materials and complementary building products, operating 179 branches in 37 states in the United States and in three provinces in Eastern Canada.

OSHA acts to protect residential roofing workers

OSHA acts to protect residential roofing workers
12/27/2010
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration today announced a new directive withdrawing a former one that allowed residential builders to bypass fall protection requirements. The directive being replaced, issued in 1995, initially was intended as a temporary policy and was the result of concerns about the feasibility of fall protection in residential building construction. However, there continues to be a high number of fall-related deaths in construction, and industry experts now feel that feasibility is no longer an issue or concern.

"Fatalities from falls are the number one cause of workplace deaths in construction. We cannot tolerate workers getting killed in residential construction when effective means are readily available to prevent those deaths," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. "Almost every week, we see a worker killed from falling off a residential roof. We can stop these fatalities, and we must."

The National Association of Home Builders recommended rescinding the 1995 directive, as did OSHA's labor-management Advisory Committee for Construction Safety and Health; the AFL-CIO; and the Occupational Safety and Health State Plan Association, which represents the 27 states and territories that run their own occupational safety and health programs.

According to data from the department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, an average of 40 workers are killed each year as a result of falls from residential roofs. One-third of those deaths represent Latino workers, who often lack sufficient access to safety information and protections. Latino workers comprise more than one-third of all construction employees.

OSHA's action today rescinds the Interim Fall Protection Compliance Guidelines for Residential Construction, Standard 03-00-001. Prior to the issuance of this new directive, Standard 03-00-001 allowed employers engaged in certain residential construction activities to use specified alternative methods of fall protection rather than the conventional fall protection required by the residential construction fall protection standard. With the issuance of today's new directive, all residential construction employers must comply with 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1926.501((13). Where residential builders find that traditional fall protection is not feasible in residential environments, 29 CFR 1926.501((13) still allows for alternative means of providing protection.

Construction and roofing companies will have up to six months to comply with the new directive. OSHA has developed training and compliance assistance materials for small employers and will host a webinar for parties interested in learning more about complying with the standard. To view the directive and for more information, visit www.osha.gov/doc/residential_fall_protection.html

Home Improvement Salesman Reveals Dirty Sales Secrets in New Tell-All Book

Home Improvement Salesman Reveals Dirty Sales Secrets in New Tell-All Book
01/17/2011

LONG BEACH, NY -- Home improvement salesmen have ways of convincing homeowners to part with money they had no intention of spending. Now, in the new e-book REPUBLIC OF RIPOFF: Confessions of a Home Improvement Salesman, "Buddy Marr," a 20-year veteran of the home improvement sales industry, is exposing the sneaky, shameful and downright deceitful practices that keep the money flowing into home improvement salesmen's pockets.

Marr, of course, is not his real name. The author is still working as a home improvement salesman, still enjoying the six-figure income generated by the sales tactics he reveals in REPUBLIC OF RIPOFF, and well aware that there are some in his industry who don't want their secrets to get out.

But that's not stopping Marr from spilling the beans. He's quick to point out that REPUBLIC OF RIPOFF is not about bad home improvement contractors looking to steal from people. It is, instead, a no-holds-barred look at how home improvement salesmen convince unsuspecting homeowners to make home renovations they would otherwise never dream of initiating. Through Marr's true stories -- some harrowing, others hilarious -- homeowners will learn how to spot the subtle psychological tricks employed to lighten their wallets, recognize the weaknesses that make most people vulnerable to such ploys, and ensure they don't fall prey to a ruthless home improvement salesman.

"It doesn't matter to some of these salesmen if you've spent most of your life scrimping and saving for the remodel that will turn your little house into your dream home," commented Marr. "They're going to do whatever they need to do within legal boundaries to put your money into their pockets. The homeowner's challenge is to learn how to prevent that from happening." REPUBLIC OF RIPOFF: Confessions of a Home Improvement Salesman is the first book available to help homeowners meet that challenge. Said Bob Berman, national science columnist, National Public Radio host, and author of six books, "I found this book to be filled with funny stories, all-too-human situations, and lots of useful information about the Home Improvement business. The unexpected treats included chapters that humorously recounted the strange checkered history of the door-to-door salesman going back two centuries. Highly recommended."

For a limited time, instant e-book download of REPUBLIC OF RIPOFF: Confessions of a Home Improvement Salesman includes two free bonuses: Marr's list of rebuttals homeowners can use to stop aggressive salesmen in their tracks, plus a guide designed to help homeowners get exactly what they want out of various home improvements -- and nothing they don't. See insider tips, read excerpts of the e-book and order it at www.homeimprovement-ripoffs.com

Skyline Roofing USA Launches RoofScamHelp.com

Skyline Roofing USA Launches RoofScamHelp.com
04/26/2011

LONGMONT, CO -- A new website, www.RoofScamHelp.com recently went live to help families who have been scammed by dishonest roofing companies. Owner of Skyline Roofing USA, Jeff Posey, envisioned the non-profit as a means of helping those in need and he is thrilled by its launch. The idea to begin RoofScamHelp.com came to Jeff when he heard the story of a single mom and middle school art teacher who was sold a roof that was never supplied to her. The roofers took her money and disappeared. A year later and after many challenges, the roofing company dropped materials in her driveway where they remained for another year and a half. Clearly, those roofers would not be installing her roof as promised. And because the mom gave all of her money to the fraudulent roofing company, she could not afford to hire new roofers. In hearing this story and knowing that roofers tend to have a negative reputation for such situations, Jeff wanted to do something to help. Skyline Roofing USA has since installed the mother's new roof free of charge and so www.RoofScamHelp.com begins.

Jeff is looking for insurance companies, contractors, suppliers, associations and manufacturers to get involved with RoofScamHelp.com in order to come together and help make roofing a first class industry. Not only do roofers need to follow through on the jobs to which they commit, but insurance companies also need to be responsible to customers who need new roofs. Posey states, "I want to see the roofing industry disappear off the top ten list of biggest industry scams and RoofScamHelp.com is the first step towards doing so."
